On October 18, Chandler-Gilbert Community College welcomed over 200 ambitious young women from 20 East Valley high schools for the highly anticipated Hermanas event. This initiative was designed specifically to inspire students in grades 9-12 to pursue education and careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) while fostering a supportive community among underrepresented female students.
The day kicked off with a warm welcome to the college, setting an encouraging tone for attendees. Participants were treated to a powerful 15-minute keynote presentation, which laid the groundwork for an inspiring day ahead. The message was clear: education is a pathway to opportunity, and the future is bright for those who pursue their dreams in STEM fields.
One of the highlights of the event was the hands-on workshops, which were designed to be fun and engaging, focusing on essential skills such as problem-solving, teamwork, and creativity. Participants had the chance to explore various STEM concepts through practical activities, igniting their curiosity and passion for these fields.
A standout feature of Hermanas was the Town Hall discussion, where participants engaged in small group conversations with successful Latina professionals. Students learned about the paths these leaders took to reach their current positions, gaining valuable insights into the challenges and triumphs they experienced along the way. This connection not only served as motivation but also provided tangible role models for the young women in attendance.
The event also featured an Education Expo, where representatives from various higher education institutions and STEM industry organizations were present to share information and answer questions. This was an excellent opportunity for attendees to explore their options, gather resources, and learn about the different pathways available to them as they prepare for college.
Another critical aspect of the Hermanas event was the session titled "From Dreams to Degrees," which focused on practical steps for preparing, enrolling, and paying for college. Participants received valuable guidance on navigating the college application process, understanding financial aid, and setting academic goals. This session empowered students to take actionable steps toward their futures.
As the day came to a close, participants gathered for the closing ceremony to reflect on their experiences. They shared what they had learned and how they planned to apply this knowledge in their pursuit of education and careers in STEM. To top off the event, attendees had the opportunity to win an educational technology incentive, an iPad, further encouraging their academic journeys.
The Hermanas conference at Chandler-Gilbert Community College was more than just a one-day workshop; it was a stepping stone for young women in the East Valley, igniting a passion for STEM and instilling the belief that they can achieve their dreams. By creating a space where underrepresented female students can connect with role models and gain practical skills, we’re not just fostering individual growth; we’re helping to shape a more diverse and inclusive future in STEM fields.
As we look forward to hosting middle school students in 2025, we remain committed to empowering the next generation of female leaders and innovators. Together, we can continue to inspire, educate, and uplift young women in their pursuit of STEM careers.
