Susana Turowski, Title V Retention Specialist
In 2022, Chandler-Gilbert Community College (CGCC) received the Department of Education’s Developing Hispanic-Serving Institutions (DHSI) Title V grant. CGCC’s Title V grant is titled ¡Éxito! Podemos Imaginar Contigo (Success! We Can Imagine With You). Its purpose is to expand educational opportunities for, and improve the academic attainment of, students—Hispanic students in particular.
As part of this grant, CGCC recently launched a Spanish page on its website to better serve students and their families. Located at cgc.edu/espanol, the site provides Spanish videos, forms, resources, contacts and information on CGCC’s programs of study, admissions, financial aid, and navigation. Susana Turowski, Title V Retention Specialist, was a former ESL teacher who is now bridging the gap for Spanish-speaking individuals interested in attending CGCC, and she is excited to have this new resource available. “Having a Spanish website is a valuable service that caters to the needs of our Spanish-speaking students and community, ensuring they receive the information and support they need in a language they understand,” said Turowski. “It allows us the opportunity to effectively communicate with a larger audience and demonstrates our commitment to embracing diversity, equity, and inclusion. It shows that we value and respect the Spanish-speaking members of our community, making them feel welcomed and included.”
Turowski explained more about the grant program and what CGCC is doing to advance its communication to Spanish speakers:
What is the Title V Program?
Turowski: The Title V Program is a federally funded program that provides Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs), such as CGCC, grant funds to expand educational opportunities and build institutional capacity to promote the success of Hispanic, low-income, and other underserved student populations. Its goal is to help increase the number of underrepresented students who enroll in college and complete a postsecondary education program.
What is CGCC doing to help Spanish-speaking students and their families?
Turowski: We are fortunate to have individuals in various departments who are fluent in Spanish and can provide assistance and support to students who may need it. For example, one of our Financial Aid representatives meets with students and their families who speak Spanish to help them fill out the FAFSA. Additionally, we have recently developed a series of financial wellness workshops specifically tailored to our students' needs (https://www.cgc.edu/news/2023/fall-2023-financial-wellness-event-series). These workshops cover important topics such as budgeting, saving, and understanding their financial aid. In order to ensure that all families can benefit from these workshops, we have made them available in both English and Spanish. We understand that language barriers should not hinder access to important information and resources. Therefore, we invite both students and parents to attend these workshops together and gain knowledge that can benefit the entire family.
What help is available for first-generation college students?
Turowski: One of the best ways to support first-generation college students is to offer mentorship and guidance. Many of them need assistance figuring out how to navigate the college system. Our first-generation students have access to receive one-on-one support from their Students Success Mentor. As their dedicated mentor, I work closely with students to develop and implement personalized success plans. I serve as a liaison between students and the various services offered at CGCC. Whether students need help preparing for their next advising appointment, accessing academic support, or finding extracurricular activities that align with their interests, as their success mentor I will be there to assist them every step of the way. We are continuously working to develop workshops and events that will provide information that is relevant to them as they navigate their college experience.
What advice do you have for these students and their parents?
Turowski: As a first-generation college graduate, I understand many of the challenges that our students face. However, I remind students and their families that it’s okay not to know everything about college, and that they are not alone in this journey. Many others have successfully navigated the college path as first-generation students, and they can too. Students should not underestimate their potential and the opportunities that await them. With determination, hard work, and the support of our community, they can achieve great things.
Is there anything else you'd like to add?
Turowski: I like to emphasize to students that it is completely normal to have questions and uncertainties about college. I encourage them not to be afraid to ask for help or seek guidance from individuals at CGCC. We have a team of dedicated professionals who are more than willing and happy to support our students every step of the way. Whether it's assistance choosing classes, understanding financial aid, or even just finding your way around campus, we are here to assist you.

"Tener un sitio web en español es un servicio valioso que satisface las necesidades de nuestros estudiantes y de la comunidad de habla hispana, asegurando que reciban la información y el apoyo que necesitan en el idioma que entienden", dijo Turowski. "Nos da la oportunidad de comunicarnos de manera efectiva con una audiencia más amplia al igual que demuestra nuestro compromiso de celebrar la diversidad, la equidad y la inclusión. ¿Qué está haciendo CGCC para ayudar a los estudiantes de habla hispana y a sus familias?
Turowski: Tenemos la suerte de contar con personas en varios departamentos que hablan español con fluidez y pueden brindar asistencia y apoyo a los estudiantes que lo necesitan. Por ejemplo, uno de nuestros representantes en el Departamento de Ayuda Financiera se reúne con estudiantes y familias que necesitan ayuda en español para completar el formulario de Solicitud Gratuita de Ayuda Federal para Estudiantes (FAFSA). Además, recientemente hemos desarrollado una serie de talleres de bienestar financiero específicamente adaptados a las necesidades de nuestros estudiantes (https://www.cgc.edu/news/2023/fall-2023-financial-wellness-event-series). Estos talleres cubren temas importantes como la creación de presupuestos, el ahorrar, y el entender cómo funciona la ayuda financiera para estudiantes. Con el fin de garantizar que todas las familias puedan beneficiarse de estos talleres, los mismos se ofrecen en inglés y en español. Entendemos que las barreras lingüísticas no deben obstaculizar el acceso a información y recursos importantes. Por eso, invitamos tanto a estudiantes como a padres a asistir juntos a estos talleres y adquirir conocimientos que puedan beneficiar a toda la familia.
¿Qué ayuda hay disponible para los estudiantes universitarios de primera generación?
Turowski: Una de las mejores maneras de apoyar a estudiantes que en sus familias son los primeros en ir a la universidad es ofrecerles tutoría y orientación. Aquellos que necesitan ayuda navegando CGCC también tienen acceso a un Mentor de Éxito Estudiantil. Igualmente, en mi rol como Especialista en Retención del Título V, yo también sirvo como mentora colaborando con los estudiantes para desarrollar e implementar planes de éxito personalizados. Sirvo como enlace entre los estudiantes y los diversos servicios que se ofrecen en CGCC. Ya sea que los estudiantes necesiten ayuda para prepararse para su próxima cita de asesoramiento, beneficiarse de distintos tipos de apoyo académico o a encontrar actividades extracurriculares que se alineen con sus intereses, como su mentora, estaré disponible para ayudarlos en cada paso del camino. Trabajamos continuamente para desarrollar talleres y eventos que brindan información relevante para nuestros estudiantes mientras estudian, se desenvuelven, y se desarrollan en CGCC.
¿Qué consejo le darías a estos estudiantes y a sus padres?
Turowski: Como graduada universitaria primera en mi familia en asistir a la universidad, entiendo muchos de los desafíos que enfrentan nuestros estudiantes. Como tal, les hago recuerdo a ellos y a sus familias que pueden contar conmigo para ayudarles y que es natural sentir aprensión al no saber todo respecto la universidad. Muchos estudiantes de primera generación han navegado con gran éxito por el camino de la universidad y ellos también pueden hacerlo. Los estudiantes no deben subestimar su potencial y las oportunidades que les esperan en CGCC o en otra universidad. Con determinación, trabajando duro, y el apoyo de la comunidad de CGCC, pueden lograr grandes metas.
¿Hay algo más que te gustaría añadir?
Turowski: Me gusta enfatizar a los estudiantes que es completamente normal tener preguntas e incertidumbres sobre la universidad. Los animo a que no tengan miedo de pedir ayuda o buscar orientación de las personas de CGCC. Contamos con un equipo de profesionales dedicados que están más que dispuestos y felices de apoyar a nuestros estudiantes en cada paso del camino. Ya sea que necesiten asistencia para seleccionar un programa de estudio, escoger clases, entender el sistema de ayuda financiera o incluso simplemente orientarse al campus, estamos aquí para ayudarlo.
